Can Pit Bulls Travel to Australia?

Questions About Pit Bull Transport to Australia

Hello PetRelocation,

I am originally from the Gold Coast and currently live in New York. We are looking into moving back to Australia but I now have two adopted pups, both Pit Bull mixes (one is mixed with what we think is a Weimaraner and the other a Lab). Online it looks like they will need to undergo a temperament test. I am wondering where I can find out more information and whether we can do this in New York?

Our dogs are very well behaved and we have never had any aggression problems but I am nervous about the travel. What happens if they are not allowed in? Does that mean we would return to New York?

I appreciate any help.

Thank You,

Jacinta

Hi Jacinta,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, Australia is pretty strict about pet imports, and as of this post Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes are not allowed to be imported into the country.

Please refer to the official Australia government website for verification of this restriction. Essentially, if your dogs look they are in any way mixed with a Pit Bull they cannot be brought into the country, regardless of their temperament.

Sorry to be the bearer of this news, Jacinta. International pet travel rules can often seem harsh, especially when it comes to breeds. If you have any questions you think we can help with, though, you're welcome to contact us to speak to a pet travel specialist.

Good luck with everything and thanks again for reaching out!
