Dog Travel to New Zealand From Fiji

Hi PetRelocation,

I'm interested in the price and biosecurity requirements involved with taking my dog from Fiji to New Zealand for 6 months and then return her to Fiji.

Thanks,

Alison

Hi Alison,

Thank you for your question! Traveling with a pet to New Zealand from Fiji is relatively easier than it would be to travel there from the United States or the EU, for example, but you'll still need to take a few steps to ensure a smooth move.

To start, please review the pet import requirements for New Zealand via the official Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) website. As you'll see when you take a look at the guidance document download, your dog will need a microchip and import permit and an inspection and 10-day quarantine will be required upon arrival. To offer a better idea of what to expect from the process, here's the story of Fletcher and Parker, two dogs we recently moved to New Zealand.

Because there are so many details to attend to -- even when coming from a Category 2 country like Fiji -- we recommend starting the planning process as soon as possible and combing through the website and instructional documents very carefully in order to avoid mistakes and subsequent delays. (Note that the MPI suggests hiring a professional pet exporter to help arrange flights, paperwork, etc.)

As for returning to Fiji, please review those pet import requirements here. Again, this process will require careful planning due to Fiji's rabies-free status.

Finally, costs will depend on several factors, but traveling to these countries with pets tends to be fairly expensive once airfare, import fees, vet visits, etc. are taken into account.

Hope this helps to get you started! Please feel free to contact us if you have more questions, and good luck with your travels.
