Here’s an Example of a Classic Puppy Scam

dogPuppy Scam Warning Signs

Hi,

Recently I come across a website/forum. I met someone who's willing to give up a 2-month-old baby Chow Chow for adoption for only RM750. He is kind enough to ship the puppy from BKK to KL.

I was thinking it is too good to be true, so I just want to check with you: how much is the cost to ship a Chow Chow to Malaysia? Just want to check if this is genuine.

Hi Eevon,

Don't do it -- this is a scam.

The scenario you've described above has all the classic warning signs of a puppy scam. Usually the person has a very cute dog, and they've offered to give it you for "free" but all you need to do is pay (low) transportation costs. They'll probably ask you to wire the money via Western Union.

In reality, there is no dog. This person just has a picture of one they found on the internet and they have no intention of sending anything. They will likely hike up the price at some point or ask you to send more money because there is a problem with the crate or an unforeseen "airport fee" and they will continue to bother you as they try to get you to send more money, but again, there is no pet and they are just trying to steal from you.

We recommend cutting off contact with this person and reading more about puppy scams and how to avoid them. Unfortunately it's hard to track or punish puppy scammers, but you can post their details in the comments section of the previously mentioned post -- maybe it will help someone else to avoid this person.

Please contact us if you have further questions, and good luck with everything. If you're looking to add a new pet to your family, we suggest only dealing locally and perhaps adopting from your local shelter!
