How to Transport a Dog From Scotland to the United States

Hi PetRelocation,

My mother's health is waning and I'm preparing for the event that she can no longer care for her small dog. I'd like to bring the dog to live with me in California eventually.

What is involved in making this happen?

Thanks,

Liz

Hi Liz,

Thank you for your question and sorry to hear about your mother -- we would be happy to help you navigate this challenging situation.

First, take a look at the pet import requirements for the United States. Luckily these rules are some of the more lenient when it comes to importing pets, so you won't need to worry about things like the rabies titer test or undergoing quarantine upon arrival.

Your dog will be flying via cargo (this can be unaccompanied, by the way), so we advise preparing your mother's dog with crate training in the weeks before the move. It's also important to choose a pet friendly airline -- we often use carriers like British Airways, United, KLM and Lufthansa due to their pet friendly policies. Finally, here are a few frequently asked pet travel questions that may help to guide you, as well.

Just let us know if you have additional questions, and if you think you'd like to hire some assistance with the move, you're welcome to contact us here for a consultation. (We specialize in making pet travel easy for pet owners by handling all door-to-door logistics.)

Hope this helps, Liz! Best wishes and good luck with everything.
