How to Transport Cats to New Zealand

Hi There,

I've been searching the internet and it's all become a whirlwind at this point! But I was wondering what the process is and what it would take to bring our two cats from the United States to New Zealand.

I'm not sure what their breeds are, as they're typical house cats, one 10 lb (female) one 15 lb (male). But I was reading there is a decontamination process? And it seems like we'd be without them for a while when we make it to New Zealand.

Any help you can provide would be great! Thanks so much!

Hi Gabriel,

Thank you for contacting us! There's definitely a whirlwind of information about pet travel out there, which is why you're on the right track by contacting an experienced pet travel company. We've helped many pets move to New Zealand (most recently Mu and Leopold) and would be happy to offer our advice.

First, review the official pet import requirements for New Zealand here. As a rabies-free country, New Zealand imposes stricter requirements than many other countries and there is a 10-day quarantine period upon arrival. Your cats will spend this time in an official quarantine facility (which isn't as scary as it may sound!).

Overall, this process is far from impossible, but you'll need to make sure each step is carefully carried out according to government regulations and according to the approved timeline.

To prepare for your trip, take a look at these frequently asked pet travel questions as well as these tips for crate training your cats in case they're not used to spending much time in the travel kennel.

Finally, if you'd rather hand over the planning responsibilities of your cats' trip to someone more experienced, feel free to contact us to set up a consultation.

Hope this helps! Just let us know if we can be of assistance and good luck with everything, Gabriel.
