Microchip & Rabies Rules for UK Pet Travel

Dear PetRelocation,

I was reading the requirements for traveling to the UK, and it says the pet has to have been microchipped before the rabies vaccine. My cat is fully vaccinated but not microchipped.

I would get the microchip before the move, but would it make a difference that I got the chip after the rabies vaccine?

Thanks,

Danielle

Hi Danielle,

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, this rule must be adhered to -- you must have the microchip implanted before you have the rabies vaccine administered or it doesn't count. Here is an overview of the pet import requirements for the UK (we also recommend checking the official DEFRA site for more information).

As you can see, the United Kingdom has relatively strict pet import rules, and in order to enjoy a smooth entry your cat must follow them carefully.

This relocation won't be impossible, though -- please take a look at this overview of frequently asked pet travel questions, as you might be wondering about a few additional details relating to how to plan safe pet travel.

Are you thinking of hiring some assistance with your move? Please contact us for a pet travel consultation to find out more about our door-to-door services. We've helped many pets move safely to the UK -- including Simon and Margaret -- and we'd be happy to help you, too.

Hopefully this helps you on your way, Danielle. Good luck and let us know if we can be of any more help!
