Navigating Japan Pet Quarantine

dogQuarantine Rules for Pets Moving to Japan

Hi PetRelocation,

I am relocating in November with my dogs, but Japan requires a 180-day quarantine.

Unfortunately, my dogs will not survive such a long quarantine. Do I have any other options?

Thanks,

Jin

Hi Jin,

Thanks for the question, we'd be happy to discuss your options with you.

According to the official pet import requirements for Japan, an actual 180-day quarantine is needed only if you have not completed the pre-move steps, which include microchip implantation, carefully timed rabies vaccinations, and a waiting period. If these steps are completed correctly before you arrive in Japan, pets are released in 12 hours or less.

If it's the case that you've yet to begin these steps and you want to move your dogs to Japan but avoid quarantine, we recommend that you start completing the requirements as soon as possible and, if you must move in November, find a boarding facility or a trusted friend or family member who can keep your dogs in Brussels until they have fulfilled the requirements and 180-day waiting period at home.

Many of our clients move before their pets -- often it's more convenient because they have time to set up their new house and settle in before welcoming their furry family members. Either way you'll have to meet Japan's import requirements, so it's up to you whether you'd like to postpone your trip, find a place for them to stay in Brussels while you go ahead, or bring them with you and face Japan's on-site quarantine.

Please contact us if you'd like to discuss these options in greater depth or speak to us about our door-to-door services. We'd be happy to help you arrange your move.

Good luck with whatever you decide!
