Sri Lanka Pet Import Rules and Requirements

Bringing pets to Sri Lanka is a complex process that will require significant time and planning, but everything can be managed safely and efficiently with the right preparation.

Regulations for Importing Pets to Sri Lanka

Attention: This information is to be used as general guidelines and may not be updated to meet the current requirements. Before you travel, be sure to contact the appropriate authorities for your destination country.

International Veterinary Certificate

Pets need an International Veterinary Certificate issued by the USDA (or if not departing from the United States, the Government Veterinary Authority in the exporting country) assuring the following.

Dogs:

Have been kept in the country of origin since birth or for six months prior to export to Sri Lanka.

Have been found to be clinically healthy at the time of the last vet visit before departure.

The dog’s country of origin is free of rabies, or the dog originates in an area free from quarantine restrictions for rabies and not within a radius of 25 km from the nearest known case of rabies during the six months immediately prior to departure.

The country of origin is free from heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infestation. If not, pets were treated with a microfilacide twice, at an interval of two weeks, and the second treatment has been done within four weeks immediately prior to departure.

Cats:

Have been kept in the country of origin since birth or for six months prior to export to Sri Lanka.

Have been found to be clinically healthy at the time of the last vet visit before departure.

The cat’s country of origin is free of rabies or the cat originates in an area free from quarantine restrictions for rabies and not within a radius of 25 km from the nearest known case of rabies during a minimum of six months immediately prior to departure.

The country of origin is free from heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infestation. If not, pets were treated with a microfilacide twice, at an interval of two weeks, and the second treatment has been done within four weeks immediately prior to embarkation.

The cat was not in contact with any animals showing any clinical sign of any infectious or contagious disease including Aujeszky's disease, Filiarisis, Leptospirosis, Rabies, Canine distemper, Infectious hepatitis, Canine parvo virus infection and Dermatomycosis for a minimum three months immediately prior to departure.

Pets will undergo an inspection at the port of entry.

Quarantine

All live animals will be subjected to a post-export quarantine period of thirty days in the owner’s premises. The importer should sign the "Quarantine Surveillance Agreement" with the Animal Quarantine Office, Katunayake, at the time of arrival. The exact location (address and telephone) of the residence where the imported dogs/cats are intended to be kept is to be stated by the importer in the quarantine surveillance agreement.

Documents to be submitted along with the application form:

Specimen Health Certificate form, which is to be obtained from the exporting country. Documents to be submitted at the time of clearance at the port of entry.

Import Permit

  • International Sanitary Certificate
  • Pre-export Quarantine Certificate if this is not indicated in the International Sanitary Certificate
  • Vaccination Certificate


Issuing of Permits

Once the application is reviewed, DG /DAPH will issue the permit. The permit issued is valid for 90 days.

Additional Details

Cats are not allowed to be imported from countries infected with BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy /mad cow disease).
