Rabbit Travel to New Zealand (Is It Possible?)

Hi PetRelocation,

I'm going to be moving to New Zealand in a year to complete my studies and I want to bring my pet rabbit with me. Is there a way and (if there is) what do I have to do?

Thanks,

Zara

Hi Zara,

Thanks for your question -- unfortunately we don't have very promising news to share with you.

As of this posting, rabbits can only be imported to New Zealand from Australia, and in fact few other pets besides cats and dogs are allowed to enter the country (only chinchillas from Great Britain and guinea pigs and rabbits from Australia). Please refer to the official New Zealand government website for more details.

As you can see, New Zealand is quite strict and imposes quarantine on all pets entering the country due to its island and rabies-free status. Also, in case you were wondering, rabbits cannot be imported to Australia from Malaysia (so a two-step process would not be possible, either).

Sorry about that, Zara! Please contact us for a pet travel consultation if you ever have any other pet travel questions, and good luck with your studies.
