Dear PetRelocation,

Our cat entered the United States two years ago with a clean bill of health and has never left the apartment. Why subject the animal to a vaccine if he is free of rabies, parasites etc.? Why can't a simple blood test and government approved check be sufficient?

Thanks,

Christine

Hi Christine,

Thanks for checking in with us. Unfortunately there is little flexibility when it comes to importing pets to a new country. Australia in particular happens to be rabies-free and very strict about pre-entry requirements, and even pets who have led a protected life and/or who used to live there must follow the rules as they're stated. It may seem unnecessary to you, but no exceptions are allowed.

According to the official Australia Government website, cats need a microchip, rabies vaccination and must be treated against parasites (internal and external). Discussing your concerns with a trusted vet may help you make a decision regarding next steps and your possible move to Australia.

Please contact us if you have any further relocation-related questions, and good luck with everything!
