Sedation Questions & Pet Travel to Japan

Hi PetRelocation,

I am moving to Japan from the U.S. and we have two cats. I was planning on sedating them, but after researching a little I realized it's harmful to sedate pets during air travel.

My female is extremely nervous and stressed going anywhere, so I'm not sure how I am going to get her through a 16 hour flight. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Dana

Hi Dana,

Thank you for your question! It's true, sedation is not recommended for pets traveling by air, and actually airlines won't even accept pets who have been sedated. Here is more information about why pet sedation during travel isn’t a good idea.

Instead, we advocate pet crate training -- the more used to the pet travel crates your kitties are, the less stressed they'll be on move day to Japan. Here are a few cat crate training tips to help you towards this goal.

It’s also important to choose a pet-friendly airline and to make sure your cats' travel crates are large enough to promote good air flow. For more on these topics, here are a few general international pet travel tips that can help you plan a safe trip to Japan with your cats.

Hope this helps! If you think you’d like some assistance with your cats' move, please fill out our pet travel consultation form to connect with a PetRelocation Specialist.
