Pet Travel Question: Bringing A Dog To Germany

Monday, April 30, 2012
by Pet Travel Center Questions
Name: Jeannine
From: San Francisco, California, USA
To: Munich, Germany
Pet: Willow, Chihuahua, 6 years, 8 pounds

Hello, I was wondering what I need to get for my dog to travel with me to Germany? We are going only to visit for 10 days. I hear conflicting information as to what she needs. She has a microchip already that has 15 digits, does she need an additional chip? She received a rabies shot exactly 30 days prior to travel, and when does the form ANNEX II form need to be filled out? I hear a lot of conflicting information and I'm trying to get everything in place for a safe, easy travel.

Thanks,
Jeannine

Hi Jeannine,

Thanks for the question! To get started, take a look at the pet import requirements for Germany. You'll see here that, among other things, you need an internationally recognized microchip and the International Health Certificate does need to be filled out within 10 days of departure. While we often move pets from the US to Germany, many people in your position may decide that the cost and stress of pet travel simply isn't worth it if it's just for a quick vacation and not a permanent move. Often pets are much happier when they're left with a trusted pet sitter, but of course the decision is up to you and we're happy to offer our advice.

Hopefully this information is helpful! Please contact us if you need further assistance or if you'd like to get a free quote for our services. Good luck!

Pet Travel Question: A Pet Vacation to the United States?

Monday, January 30, 2012
by Pet Travel Questions
Name: Doreen
Number of Pets: 2
Pet Type: Dogs
Pet Breed: Shih Tzu
From: Germany
To: USA

We recently moved to Germany from the US. We would like to travel back with our two dogs to the US for vacation. What do I require to bring my dogs back to Germany? We will only be gone for 10 days.

Thanks
Doreen

Hi Doreen,

Thanks for contacting us with your question. These are the pet import requirements for the United States and the pet import requirements for Germany. Make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date, and you'll need to once again have the correct health documents signed and verified within 10 days of departure.

While it sounds like you're experienced travelers, we normally suggest that pet owners avoid booking long flights for their dogs if possible (it may not be worth the time, effort and stress to go through the experience of flying if it's for a quick vacation rather than a permanent relocation).

Please contact us if you have any more questions, Doreen, and good luck with whatever you decide!

Pet Travel Question: Moving Cats to the Canary Islands

Friday, January 20, 2012
by Pet Travel Questions
Name: Silvia
Number of Pets: 2
Pet Type: Cat
From: Dublin
To: Canary Islands

I am considering moving for eight months  to a year from Dublin, Ireland to Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain. Aerlingus does not accept any pets in cabin, nor in cargo. I was thinking about taking a longer route and going through Germany with two or three stops, but that sounds too long for the cats to be comfortable. What would be my options? Also, they are Irish cats, would they suffer too much in the hot weather?

Thanks,
Silvia

Hi Silvia,

Thanks for your question! First, there are a few pet travel misconceptions it may be helpful to address. It's easy to assume that cabin travel is always preferable to cargo travel, but in fact this isn't the case. Cabin travel can be noisy and stressful for pets, while being placed in the temperature-controlled cargo area run by a pet-friendly airline tends to offer a less confusing experience. Also, it's often assumed that direct flights are best, but in fact we often schedule a few shorter flights so that pets have a chance to take breaks at pet-relief areas.

In terms of the climate in the Canary Islands, that's an issue that's best to discuss with your vet.

Good luck with whatever decisions you make, Silvia! You're certainly welcome to contact us with more questions, and we also have a free quote form if you're interested in finding out more about the cost of our services.

Pet Move Customer Testimonial: Moving Cats to Dubai

by PetRelocation.com Customer

Company: Emerson
Pets Names: Merrick & Akasha
From: Riverview, FL
To: Dubai, UAE

My husband's company was moving us to Dubai, and our 9-year-old cats have never flown. This was just the beginning...

At first we felt like we could handle the details, so we tried to do all the required paperwork, vet visits, airlines and Internet searches. We soon found out that this was a much bigger task than we could handle while trying to work, pack, and organize the move.

Thank goodness for Scotty with PetRelocation.com. All it took was one phone call and he took it from there. He arranged the correct vet documents along with delivery of those, flight details which included extra attention to the cats during the layover in Germany, correct crate set up and info, and he had them picked up at home and delivered to our new home in Dubai.

They arrived clean, with their crates clean, and most importantly, safe. I was very concerned and scared for my furry babies, however once Scotty took over, my nerves did calm down. As you can see they are happy cats, doing what all cats do, trying to squeeze into boxes they don't fit into.

Thank you PetRelocation.com for having Scotty on board. We will definitely be calling him when we relocate again.

Pet Travel Question: Moving Puppies

Number of Pets: 1
Pet Type: Dog
Pet Breed: Rottweiler
From: USA
To: Germany

Can I send an 8-week-old puppy to Germany without getting a Rabies shot?

Thanks,
Liz

Hi Liz,

Thanks for your question! Because the health of a pet should come first when planning a move, it's our company policy not to relocate puppies until they are at least four months old. They're old enough to get a rabies vaccine by then, and they're generally better able to deal with the traveling experience.

Here are the pet import requirements for Germany. Take a look at the information out there, and please contact us if you have any more questions. Good luck with all future traveling!

Pet Travel Question: How to Time a Rabies Vaccine

Thursday, October 20, 2011
by Pet Travel Questions
Name: Iv
Number of Pets: 1
Pet Type: Dog
Pet Breed: Golden Retriever
From: USA
To: Bulgaria through Germany

Hello,
I cannot understand something about rabies vaccinations and importing dogs in Europe. I found some information for importing pets to Bulgaria on the site of the Bulgarian Embassy in London, but should the vaccine be given "within the last 12 months AND minimum of 4 weeks before arrival" or is it "within the last 12 months OR minimum of 4 weeks before arrival"? We plan to travel in the beginning of November. Our vaccination was done in 2009 - more than year ago. We will redo it now but what about this ONE MONTH regulation?

Thanks for your assistance,
Iv.

Hi Iv,

Thanks for the question! The details surrounding pet moves can definitely be confusing, so hopefully we can clarify this issue. Simply, in order to move your pet to Bulgaria, you will need to wait at least a month from the time of the rabies vaccine. (It needs to fall within that stated time period -- more than a month, but less than a year.)

Hopefully this answers your question. Please contact us if you need any more help, and good luck!

Hi! I'm moving to Spain and I want to take my cat into the cabin with me. I'm flying via Germany to Spain from Edinburgh airport. What paperwork do I need?

Hi Cristina,

Thanks for the question. To prepare for this trip, you'll want to check the pet import requirements for Spain and do a little research regarding pet-friendly airlines. We recommend KLM or Lufthansa -- check with them regarding their most up-to-date policies for in-cabin pet travel.

Pet Travel Question: Rabies Vaccines for Puppies

by Pet Travel Questions
Name: Dennis
Number of Pets: 1
Pet Type: Dog
Pet Breed: Labrador
From: USA
To: Germany

Our puppy is five weeks old. Moving him to Germany would require different vaccines at least four weeks before the travels, but since he is so young, it's not possible to vaccinate him that early. Are there any exceptions for young puppies concerning the required vaccinations?

Thanks in advance,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

These are the pet import requirements for Germany. You can double check with the proper government offices, but yes, in our experience you'll need to wait until your dog is old enough to be vaccinated before making this trip.

Talk to your vet about any safety issues you're concerned about, and contact us if you have any more questions. Good luck and happy travels!

Pet Travel Question: Moving a High-Needs Dog to China

Monday, June 27, 2011
by Pet Travel Questions
Name: Guenter
Number of Pets: One
Pet Type: Dog
From: Germany
To: Shanghai, China

The dog is a 12-year-old Mini-Poodle. All his rabies vaccinations were done and will be done in July 2011. We will also show an approved statement of health from a local vet clinic or the official veterinarian. We will carry him with us as cabin baggage, as his weight is less than five kilos. The dog has diabetes and needs an insulin injection twice a day. Due to the diabetes he is almost blind and needs a special care, so we need to know if there is a way to avoid the seven day quarantine. Could you support us with your service in this case?

Thanks a lot,
Guenter

Hi Guenter,

Your concerns are understandable and we hope we can help you! To start, take a look at the pet import requirements for China on our site. Here's another resource that may help clarify your situation. In terms of the quarantine, entering Shanghai from another locale (Hong Kong or Guangzhou) may help you to avoid it.

Also, since your dog is older and has some health issues, it's important to have an honest conversation with your vet before you go. Is your pet really fit to travel? What can be done to make the process easier? These are important questions to ask.

Good luck with everything! Contact us directly if you have more questions, and please feel free to seek out a free quote on our website if you're interested in our services.

Pet Travel Question: Moving Cats to Namibia

Wednesday, June 22, 2011
by Pet Travel Questions
Name: Linda
Number of Pets: 1
Pet Type: Cat
Pet Breed: Persian
From: Czech Republic
To: Namibia

Hi,
We will travel from Prague to Frankfurt with my cat in the cabin via Lufthansa, and in Frankfurt he will be checked in as excess baggage for the flight to Windhoek on Air Namibia. I have obtained the Import permit from Namibia for my cat. For my cat to travel between EU countries, (Czech Republic and Germany) he only needs to have a microchip and his rabies vaccinations, together with a health check and the EU pet passport. I am not sure what the rules are for Namibia. The state vet said that he has to be in quarantine for 30 days upon arrival, but I read online that's not necessary. What documentation do I need to have completed upon arrival at Hosea Kutako airport?

Thank you,
Linda

Hi Linda,

Since you're coming from an EU country, you should be in a pretty good position to import your cat with the documents and vaccinations you've mentioned. We don't believe there's a quarantine, but just in case it would be a good idea to contact the proper Namibian authorities to find out about any other possible requirements:

Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry
Directorate of Veterinary Services
Private bag 12022
Windhoek
NAMIBIA
Tel: +264 61 2087505
Fax: +264 61 2087779
Email: vetpermits@mawrd.gov.na

Good luck with everything, and please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any more questions or concerns. Thanks for the question!

Pet Travel Question: Transiting through Frankfurt

Tuesday, June 21, 2011
by Pet Travel Questions
Name: David
Number of Pets: 2
Pet Type: Cats
From: Houston, TX, USA
To: Baku Azerbaijan via Frankfurt Airport

What are the requirements for traveling through Frankfurt Airport, Germany while in transit to Azerbaijan?

Thanks,
David

Hello David,

Thanks for the question! Generally, when briefly transiting through an airport it's not necessary to meet that particular country's import requirements. If you're flying with Lufthansa, you'll be able to take advantage of the Lufthansa Animal Lounge, where pets follow one of three routes and will be allowed to take a break from the confines of their travel crate, etc. It's a pretty nice set-up!

For your information, here are the pet import requirements for Azerbaijan. Please contact us if you'd like some help arranging your move, and good luck with everything!
