Answering Questions About International Ferret Travel

Hi PetRelocation,

My partner and I are looking at getting two ferrets, but we are very conscious that we are hoping to move to Japan for a year or so in the next few years.

Could you tell me if it is possible to take ferrets with you to Japan from the UK and vice versa? And also what kinds of costs are involved if this is possible?

Many thanks,

Jess

Hi Jess,

Thank you for your question. When researching international pet travel, it's usually a good idea to start the process by checking in with the Ministry of Agriculture or other government entity of the country you'd like to know more about.

According to the Japan Animal Quarantine service, for example, ferrets are allowed into the country and do not face a quarantine. When coming back to the United Kingdom, ferrets may return without a quarantine provided you follow the rules of the Pet Travel Scheme. We recommend combing through this information carefully to answer any additional questions you may have about the process of moving pet ferrets to Japan and back again.

As for other details you'll want to research before you buy ferrets, we'd suggest checking with the airlines you're considering to find out what their procedures are for ferret travel (they would most likely need to travel via cargo in a specific airline-approved travel crate). Specific city and housing rules are worth exploring also so that you don't encounter any surprises when it comes to living in your new home with your pets.

The costs of pet travel vary depending on several factors, but you can probably expect to spend a few hundred dollars after taking into account airfare, crates, pre-export paperwork and vet visits as well as any unexpected details that may arise.

Just like with international dog and cat travel, ferret travel will require significant time and energy (but it's not impossible). Feel free to contact us for a pet travel consultation if you're interested in hiring some assistance in the future, and good luck!
