Move your pet bird

We've been moving pets, especially lots of birds lately - from parakeets to macaws to cockatiels, birds are definitely flying around the world!  Taking the time to get your bird used to his new environment requires some extra care but makes it easier in the long run for you and your feathered friend!

Nest Sweet Nest

Where you put your bird's cage in your new home is very important.  Ideally you'll want to make sure the cage is placed somewhere that there will not be too much activity to overwhelm him.  However, if your bird is particularly attached to you, you'll want to make sure he is somewhere he won't be alone all of the time. If you can, find a spot for your bird's cage that is located in a quiet spot in the house but somewhere he can still interact with you.

Keep 'em Separated after Pet Travel

If you have more than one bird, it's a good idea to keep your birds in separate crates away from each other for at least a month or so.  Pets under stress tend to lash out at other animals when they normally might get along.  Also, if one of your birds catches a disease while traveling (which is rare but always a possibility), your other bird has a better chance of not becoming infected.  Don't forget to keep your birds' food and water dishes apart as well.

A Healthy Bird is a Happy Bird

Before you move your pet bird, make sure you have found an avian veterinarian in your new area.  You can ask your current vet if they have any referrals for a new veterinarian or check out the Association of Avian Veterinarians' listings if your vet doesn't know anyone in your new area. sure to take him to your local avian veterinarian for a general check up. Your veterinarian will be able to check and make sure that your new pet bird is free of any bacterial infections, contagious diseases or worms and ready for pet travel.
