
We have posted a few stories here on our blog about Malaysia and have just recently been asked for more clarification on a few points that we want to make sure our readers know about, as they plan on moving with their pets to Malaysia!
Please remember, that when dealing with Dogs and Cats, it is important to make sure that each of them have their respected shots and vaccinations complete. It is very important, although not required, to have all of your pets micro chipped & treated for worms and fleas. As they have to spend 7 days in quarantine with other pets and It will be best to make sure your pets are protected as they wait their time in quarantine.
Please note, that pet move quarantine is for 7 days and this is Mandatory for Malaysia.
If you are bringing in cats to Malaysia, the following must be done at least 30 days from date of departure and not more than 12 months before entry.
a) Anti Rabies Vaccination
b) Must be vaccinated against the following: Feline Rhinotrachtitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopnia
As for the dogs, they must have the following vaccinations
a) Anti Rabies
b) Vaccination against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis, hepatitis and kennel cough
For dogs, please note that the following breeds are banned from Malaysia:
a) Akita
b) American Bulldog
c) Dogo Argentino
d) Fila Brazillero
e) Japanese tosa
f) Neopolitan Mastiff
G) Pit Bull Terrier / Pit Bull (also known as American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier And Staffordshire Bull Terrier)
The following breeds are allowed with a special permit
a) Bull Mastiff
b) Bull Terrier
c) Doberman
d) German Shepherd (including the Belgian Shepherd and East European Shepherd
e) Perro de Presa Canario (also known as Canary Dog)
f) Rottweiler
If you are planning to import the above mentioned dogs, then an approval to import restricted breeds of dogs shall be obtained in writing from the Director of State Veterinary Services (director) subject to the following conditions, prior to application of an import permit
1) Dogs must not be less than 3 months of age at the time of import
2) Dogs must have a pedigree certificate issued by an approved organization in the country of export (name and address of the organization shall be specified)
3) Dogs must be identified using an ISO compliant microchip and the identification codes clearly recorded in the pedigree certificate
4) Name and address of the importer who shall be responsible for the care and the handling of the dog shall be clearly stated in the application for approval
5) The premise or residence of the dog shall be inspected by the director to verify facilities regarding kennel, size of the compound, safety and control of the dog
6) The importer shall provide a written declaration that the dog
A) is a personal pet and not intended for sale (importation of controlled breeds of dogs allowed as a personal pet of the importer or for the security purpose only)
B) shall be kept secured within the compound at all times
C) shall be kept on a leash and muzzled at all times
D) shall be kept on a leash and muzzled at all times in public area
E) shall be under the control of a trained and skilled handler at all times (for security dogs)
Owners stand a better chance of getting an approval if they can send photos of their dogs with kids and being shown in a happy, loving environment.
All Import Permits are valid for 30 days.
As for quarantine rules and regulations:
Owners are allowed to visit their pets daily even during the weekends. Visiting hours are from 9am to 4 pm. Owners are allowed to spend the whole day woth their pets. Do not enter from 1pm to 2pm as they are closed for lunch.
For special feeding needs, the owners need to tell or even send their food in advance to the pet travel Quarantine Station.
