Question:
Hi, I'm moving back to the US with my husband and dog next week. I'm worried because I haven't found a vetenarian who has and can insert an ID chip in Tunisia. What are the rules for traveling from Tunisia to US with a stopover in Rome? Do I still need the ID chip or not?
- Vivian N.
Answer:
Hi Vivian,
The US does not require a microchip for entry, so coming into the pet friendly US will not be a problem. Italy could prove to be rather tricky, depending on how long your stop is. As long as you don't switch airlines when you're in Rome, and just stop for refueling or a layover, you won't need a microchip to enter the US. If you try to stop in Rome for a few days or if you have to switch airlines in Rome, then you will run into trouble as you are technically importing your dog into Italy and Italy does require a microchip. For more details on the import requirements for Italy, you can see our checklist here.
Otherwise, US pet import requirements can be found here.
