How to Move a Cat to Hong Kong

Name: Fiona
From: Seattle
To: Hong Kong
Pet: Cat (Rollie)

Dear PetRelocation,
I want to send Rollie back from Seattle to Hong Kong. I read some airline pet info about cat travel to Hong Kong, and it says the cats can only travel in cargo. Does it mean we will not arrive on the same time? Can I go with my cat? Also, I am not sure if there is a direct flight for cargo, which airline is better for the cat, what it costs, etc. I have no idea on how to do all this :(

Thanks,
Fiona

Hi Fiona,
It's completely understandable that you feel overwhelmed right now. International pet travel is not something most people deal with every day, and learning how to handle it well takes lots of time and education.

First, you can take a look at the pet import requirements for Hong Kong to get an idea of the rules, and you can also read over this list from our blog of frequently asked pet travel questions. It may seem scary, but most of the pets we move do not fly on the same plane as their owners; this is actually the preferable option because it lets you plan your own trip without worrying.

When you've chosen a pet friendly airline, the cargo travel process is safe and preferable, as well. Again, many pets have traveled safely this way and it's just a matter of planning everything correctly and well in advance.

Because there are so many considerations, many pet owners choose to enlist the help of an expert for a move like this (here are the specific ways pet travel experts can help with a move). If you're interested in finding out more about our door-to-door services, please fill out our free quote form. You can also check IPATA.org for guidance if you'd like to handle parts of the move yourself and/or hire local agents on your own.

Hopefully this helps to get you started. Please contact us if you have any more questions, and good luck with everything!
