Once you arrive into Mexico City, you won’t have to go far in Mexico City to find a dog-friendly park as there are lots of them, especially in the Roma, Condesa, Lomas areas, as well as in the south around Pedregal and San Angel. Also discover the coastal towns of Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen with spectacular beaches of clear turquoise waters that are ideal for families wanting to chill out, swim and just enjoy the gorgeous sunshine.
Another fun day out awaits everyone, exploring the extensive Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, or those around Tulum. For a bird’s-eye view of the city take the family up high on the 44-storey Torre Latinoamericana building in Mexico City; as well as Playa del Carmen's Xcaret Eco Theme Park for dolphins, shows and ruins or snorkeling at Garrafon Marine Park. He will happily wait it out safely back at the ranch while you visit the Crocodile Park near Puerto Morelos. Your furry travel companion will happily greet you upon your return and be raring to go for a run with you; although you may only up for a slow stroll after all the day’s activities!
Basic Mexican food is simple, consisting of tortillas, beans, chilies, squash and tomatoes with cocoa, vanilla, garlic, onions, olives and/or citrus for added flavor. The tortilla is the foundation of many Mexican dishes, including the humble enchilada. Many dining spots are al-fresco and in the open air which is a bonus for pet-friendly travelers! If a lot of the eating is done alfresco or outside on sidewalk cafe environments; your trusty dog may be welcome.
• For all those other times do try your hand at cooking some traditional Mexican cuisine in your pet-friendly home-away from home kitchen. A Mexican-style pizza sounds scrumptious! Top a pizza base / flat bread with refried beans, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, grated cheese and olives!
• Don’t forget to visit La Opera: arguably the capital's best-known cantina with live Mexican music complete with a bullet hole in the ceiling from the rebel general of the Mexican Revolution- Pancho Villa's gun when he visited in the early 1900’s! You may not be able to take your lovable dog though, please check prior to going!
• You can take your dog to enjoy a fun reward for him to enjoy, a doughnut-style treat from Churrería El Moro; and then wash it down with a rich tasting hot chocolate for yourself and cup of fresh water for your dog!
With so many people opting to take their pets with them rather than leaving them behind; it’s no surprise that more and more pet friendly establishments are popping up everywhere. A good tip when booking in is to use a little front desk diplomacy: Explain that you are a responsible pet owner, that the dogs are clean, don't bark, won't be left in the room, have their own beds and that you will clean up after them. Of course, it is important to stick to your promises. It is also advisable to do some homework before your trip by doing a pet-friendly search online and emailing your enquiry first!
