Pet Travel to the US from Amsterdam - Rabies Requirements

June 1st, 2009
By Pet Relocation, admin

My family with our cat moved to the Netherlands in late July 2007 from California. Just before the move our cat received a three-year rabies shot as well as the 10 day prior to departure check up. We are now moving back to California at the end of June. Will my cat need another rabies shot or will the one she received in the US prior to leaving still be working? Thanks Bob

The United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) requires that all dogs and cats entering the country be current on their rabies vaccination.  The US, unlike some other countries, does recognize the three-year rabies vaccine for its entire three years (some countries only recognize the three-year vaccine for one year).

Since your cat had a three year vaccine less than three years ago, you will not have to give your cat another rabies shot prior to leaving the Netherlands.

Happy travels Bob!
