GEOGRAPHY

Ukraine is the state in Eastern Europe, which in the north borders on Belarus, in the north and east on the Russian Federation, in the west on Poland, Slovakia, in the south-west on Hungary, Romania, and Moldova, and in the south it is washed by the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. Ukraine is situated between 44 and 52 degrees latitude in the continental temperate zone in Eastern Europe and has an area of 603,000 km2.

The total area of Ukraine is 603,700 sq. km. The population of Ukraine is 50 million. The area spanned in the west-east direction is 1300 km, from north to south 900 km.

The longest river of Ukraine is the Dnipro, which is 2201 km long, of which 981 km flows down trough Ukraine. The largest mountain system in Ukraine is the Carpathian Mountains that extend for more than 270 km and are 100-110 km wide. The highest mount is Hoverla (2061 m).

Located in Eastern Europe and washed by Black Sea and Sea of Azov, Crimean Peninsula with 26 100 km2 territory borders with Kherson distric(Ukraine) in the north and separated from Krasnodarsky Kray(Russia) by Kerch strait in its east.

The capital of Autonomous Republic of the Crimea is Simferopol.

Major cities: Feodosia, Kerch, Sevastopol, Simferopol, Sudak, Yalta, Yevpatoria. But total - 16 cities.

Nature reserves : Askania-Nova, Cape Aiya, Crimean reserve, Lebyazh`y ostrova(Swan Islands) and Yalta reserve.

Main rivers: Salgir, Indol, Biuk-Karasu, Tchernaya, Belbek, Kacha, Alma.

Highest mountains: Roman-Kosh (1545m), Demir-Kapu (1540m), Zeytin-Kosh (1534m), Kemal-Egerek (1529m), Eklizi-Burun (1527m), Angara-Burun (1453m).

Climate

Ukraine is located in the temperate climatic zone. The climate is mainly moderate continental. The average temperatures are: winter - from -8 C to + 2 C (from 17,6 F to 35.6 F); summer - from +17 C to + 25 C (from 62.6 F to 77 F).

The subtropical climate prevails in the south of Ukraine (the Crimea, southern coast of the Black Sea).

Southern Coast of the Crimea has sub-Mediterranean, mild continental climate with hot dry summer and mild warm humid winter. Average temperature in summer|July| +23,0° +24,5° and in winter |January| +2,0° +4,0°. Annual precipitation at Southern coast of the Crimea is about 350-650(mm).We have 250-300 SUNNY DAYS per year.

Mountain part divides Southern Coast of the Crimea from Midland has light continental climate with warm and mild humid summer and cool humid winter.

 Midland part of the Crimea has mild continental steppe climate with hot dry summer and cool humid winter. Average temperature in summer |July| +22,0° +23,5° and in winter |January| -2,3° - 0,0°. Annual precipitation at Midland of the Crimea is about 340-480(mm).
