Pet friendly airlines reminder: Military dog missing after flight on regular airline

By Pet Relocation | April 22nd, 2010

A military police dog has gone missing after a flight from Norway, WTOP reported:

A Norwegian military dog is missing on the grounds of Dulles International Airport.  "The airline called me to the gate and told me my dog had escaped," Gunn Anita Fossli, a platoon commander for the Norwegian Armed Forces Military Police, tells WTOP.  The 20-month-old Doberman was crated, but somehow ended up outside of the travel box and on the tarmac of an Iberian Airlines flight Wednesday night.

This highlights the importance of using pet friendly airlines, particularly for international travel.  Most airlines are not set up to handle live animals appropriately, so using airlines that do not have a pet safe policy in place can lead to these kinds of incidents.  Also, we always recommend metal crates for military and police dogs, in order to make sure that they do not escape while in transit.

"I can't thank you enough!"

Hey Matt,

Just wanted to let you know that Murphy arrived safe and sound late yesterday afternoon. I can't thank you enough for helping me get him back to the States after our hasty departure from Norway.

Thanks again, and I am sure I will be using you again in the future.

Rules:
Attention:  This information is to be used as general guidelines and may not be updated to meet the current requirements.  Before you travel, be sure to contact the appropriate authorities for your destination country.

NORWAY IMPORT RULES AND REQUIREMENTS:

1. Microchip:  Each Pet shall be identified by means of a microchip.  No other form of identification is acceptable. The microchip used should comply with ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to ISO standard 11785- otherwise the pet will need to be sent with it’s own scanner attached to the top of the crate.

2. Rabies Vaccination & Certificate: All pets must have an original Rabies Certificate and this certificate must state the microchip number, the date of inoculation and the validity of the particular vaccination you obtain – some are good for two years, others are only good for one.  This vaccine must be an inactivated vaccine.

3. Rabies Titer / FAVN-OIE Tests: This test needs to be done 120 days after the most recent rabies shot but no later than 365 days.  FAVN or Fluorescent Antibody Viral Neutralization (FAVN) Blood Test is to ensure that the rabies vaccinations have provided adequate rabies antibody levels and must be approved by an approved Government Facility.  You or your Vet will send these to:

4. Echinococcus Treatment – Dogs and Cats must have a tapeworm (echinococcus) treatment no more than 10 days before arriving.  This treatment shall be repeated within 7 days after arriving.  Both treatments, including the name and dosage shall be certified in the Certificate listed in step #6. The treatment used MUST contain the ingredient – praziquantel – and be administered in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

5. EU Vet Health Certificate (Form EC#: 998)– This is the standard Health Certificate to be filled out by your USDA accredited Veterinarian.   If your pet is going to be traveling as ‘unaccompanied cargo’ you will need the commercial variant, which needs to be issued and USDA endorsed within 24 hours of departure.  This means that the tapeworm treatment (step 4) and International Health Certificate (step 7) must also be done within that 24 hour time period.

6. USDA Endorsement:  The above referenced forms:

  • Microchip Implantation Record
  • Rabies Certificate
  • Rabies Titer Test Results
  • EU Vet Health Certificate

Must be sent to your local USDA for their stamp of approval.  Please contact your local representative on the best way of handling this.

7. International Health Certificate – Within 10 days of departure your vet will need to issue an International Health Certificate as required by all airlines.  This certificate states that your pet is in good health and OK to fly.

Geography

25,000 years ago Norway was covered by ice 3-4 km thick. It took almost 18,000 years to melt. In Oslo, where Kari lives, the land has risen no less than 200 m since the Ice Age and it still rises a few millimetres each year.It is located in Northern Europe, bordering the North Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, west of Sweden. The Geographic coordinates are 62 00 N, 10 00 E .It has the total area ofland area of 307,860 sq km and water of16,360 sq km. 324,220 sq km including

Large areas of Norway consist of forests and mountains. We generally divide the country into northern and southern Norway but geographically we can refer to 4 regions. Southeast Norway contains extensive areas of forest, gentle valleys and rich arable land. In the southwest, nature is more dramatic with deep fjords penetrating 200 km or more into the heart of the country where mountain glaciers lie. The central region also has fjords and a coastline but here the mountains are more gentle and there are also extensive lowland areas. In northern Norway the landscape is a mixture of valleys, fjords, mountains and islands. Border countries are Finland 729 km, Sweden 1,619 km, Russia 167 km .

Climate

The climate in Norway varies a great deal from one region to another but the four seasons are distinct throughout the whole country. In the northernmost region, Finnmark, the temperature can vary from -52 degrees C in the winter to more than +30 degrees C in the summer. The coastal climate is one of mild winters and cool summers, while inland winters are cold and summers are hot. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream bring a mild climate to coastal areas and ensure ice-free harbours even in winter.

Thanks for all your hard work.
