Dogs Moving in Russia by Trains

By Pet Relocation | February 1st, 2010

The Daily Dish has a couple of great stories up this week, one about the stray dogs who have learned how to move around the city of Moscow by riding trains

[Animal specialist Andrei] Neuronov says there are some 500 strays that live in the metro stations, especially during the colder months, but only about 20 have learned how to ride the trains. This happened gradually, first as a way to broaden their territory. Later, it became a way of life. “Why should they go by foot if they can move around by public transport?” he asks.

“They orient themselves in a number of ways,” Neuronov adds. “They figure out where they are by smell, by recognising the name of the station from the recorded announcer’s voice and by time intervals. If, for example, you come every Monday and feed a dog, that dog will know when it’s Monday and the hour to expect you, based on their sense of time intervals from their biological clocks.”

There has been quite a bit of talk about the stray situation in Moscow.  While some pets live like kings and queens, others are cast aside on the streets.  Many expats who relocate to Moscow and Russia have a difficult time with the adjustment.  For details on moving dogs and cats to Russia, check out our Russia pet import requirements.  We also have a great firsthand account from a past customer who moved with dogs to Russia.

Geography

The resort city of Sochi stretches for 145 km along the Black Sea coast. The warm sea and the nearby Main Caucasian Range have formed in this land of Russia a unique climate of humid subtropics, which is not typical of this latitude elsewhere on the globe. The highest summits reaching 2,500-2,000 m are found in Adler (a district of Sochi). This natural barrier shields the coast from cold continental air. Further on, in the north-west region of Tuapse, the mountain range narrows and becomes flatter, with summits reaching 300-800m above sea level. And even further, in Anapa region,  there are no mountains. This relief accounts for the Mediterranean climate and cold north-east storms rushing in winter into Tuapse - Anapa coastal area as well as into the South Coast of  the Crimea, while the sea resort region of Sochi (from Lazarevskoye to Adler) protected by mountains is a land of humid subtropics.

Climate

Due to the warm climate,  four seasons can hardly be specified in Sochi. Actually there are only two seasons here – the warm period from May till October, and a cooler period from November till April. Sochi’s ‘winter’ is mild, with no frosts, and snow is a rare surprise here. On such extraordinary occasions when it snows the snow lasts only for 2 or 3 days. The average temperature in January  is +5ÂșÑ +6ÂșÑ. Yet in March the amount of sunshine allows holidaymakers to take sun baths and get the sun tan. The heat of Summer is moderated by cool breezes and ‘fans’ – the mild winds coming from the valleys in the mountains.

Clear, cloudless weather is typical of Sochi’s summers, the average temperature in July is +22ÂșÑ +23ÂșÑ. Autumn months are dry, warm, and the ‘velvet season’ lasts long. The average temperature in September is +19,8Âș, in October +15,9Âș, in November +11,8Âș. Sochi’s weather is beneficial for health practically in any season.   The warm seaside climate is good for rich flora too. Sochi is a land of 6 thousand species of flowers, trees and shrubs. The area has turned to be a perfect place for many imported plants to grow: tea, persimmon, mushmula, feijoa, citrus plants. In the coastal zone and at the foot of the mountains  there are Colkhis  forests of many relict forms. Sochi is the only region in Russia that survived the Ice age, so groves of yew and boxwood trees grow in wild here. This is the only Russian city where palms decorate streets, not greenhouses, and the sights of blooming magnolia trees can be enjoyed only in Sochi!

While on the other sides of the nearby mountains in winter there are severe frosts, in Sochi it only rains, trees are green, flowers bloom. This only Russian city of humid subtropics has always excited guests.

By its extraordinary variety of curative factors Sochi is unbeatable in the world. Whereas the US, French, Italian, Turkish and other resorts on the globe offer only leisure holidays, Sochi has much more to offer. Catering for our guests’ health recreation, we turn on a generous supply of natural resources. The curative properties of our climate are applied to the utmost in health resort programs at “Rus”, as we have developed all proper conditions for intensifying the effect of natural factors by advanced spa-methods. The “Rus” resort is a destination for comfortable pleasant and meaningful rest. This is where Sochi holidays comply with the world’s best standards of spa resort services and the best hospitality traditions!

FROM RUSSIA WITH KALASHNIKOV

Where would the war on terror be without the faithful Kalashnikov? Since it rolled into production in the 50s, the AK-47 is the best selling and affordable assault rifle ever produced. This has led to it being synonymous with poor freedom fighters and terrorists the world over. It is hard to imagine an extremist propaganda video without at least one person holding one of these fearsome icons; simply seeing a drawing of the weapon is likely to stir patriotic blood on both sides of the conflict.
