Pet Travel Advice: Jamaica’s Tough Import Policy

Are Dogs Allowed to Travel to Jamaica?

Hi PetRelocation,

How can I get my pet into Jamaica from the USA? I have seen that Jamaica only accepts pets from the UK and Ireland.

Also, I might have to visit South Africa for 6-8 months. What are the requirements to take my dog from the United States to South Africa and then return.

Is it easier to get a pet into Jamaica from South Africa?

Many thanks,

Hi Wendy,

Thank you for your inquiry, we're happy to provide some guidance.

Unfortunately, Jamaica is very strict about importing pets. Only dogs born and raised in the United Kingdom or Ireland may be brought into the country, and that's only if they've never been vaccinated against rabies and never come into contact with animals from other countries.

An Import Permit from Jamaica must also be secured before a pet may enter the country. You can read more about Jamaica's pet policy here.

As for your second and third questions, take a look at the South Africa Pet Import Guidelines. Compared to Jamaica, South Africa is a more welcoming country, but there are still several requirements to fulfill and Jamaica doesn't allow dogs coming from South Africa.

Sorry we couldn't provide more positive news to you! Some countries are simply very strict when it comes to pet imports.

Feel free to contact us if you'd like to speak to a Pet Relocation Consultant for more information or if you'd like to enlist us for help with an upcoming pet move.

Good luck with everything!

I was wondering if there is anyway my dog can fly from canada into Jamaica

By on April 3, 2017 at 9:14 am

Hi Victoria, At this time it seems the rules do not allow pets to enter Jamaica from Canada, but it might be worth contacting the Jamaica Ministry of Agriculture directly to find out more. Good luck and thanks for checking in!

in this article from one of the Jamaican local newspapers, an official from the Ministry of Agriculture states that one can apply to bring in.coman animal from outside of the UK and Ireland: law is being reviewed. I'd suggest anyone wanting to emigrate to Jamaica with a dog from other countries contact the Ministry of Agriculture's Veterinary Division to see if they might obtain a permit.

Thanks for this update, Marie! Many pet owners will be happy to hear of this new development.

Can I bring my puppy from Jamaica to Canada. If so what do I have to do.

Hi Jodi, If you're going to Canada from Jamaica, you'll need to follow Canada's import rules as outlined here: Among other things, it looks like you'll need a rabies certificate and a veterinary certificate. Feel free to continue exploring our blog for more pet travel tips, and if you'd like to find out more about our services, you can contact us here for a consultation: Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi Diana, sorry to hear about your stressful situation!

As stated above, Jamaica is extremely strict when it comes to pet imports. As far as we know it's still not possible to bring dogs into the country from the United States, but we recommend checking with a more official source to find out for sure. Please contact the Ministry of Agriculture Veterinary Division for the most current and accurate information. We hope they can help, good luck!
