Pet Travel Question: Moving a Dog from India to the US

I have a list of documents required for my dog's move from India to the United States. I have a kennel club registered dog. Does my dog need to be neutered? What if I do not wish to neuter? We have all the records of his rabies vaccination and other vaccinations and can obtain the required certificates from his vet. What are the quarantine laws in the United States?

Thank you,

Hi Neha,

Thanks for your questions. Pet transport to the United States is relatively simple, and you can see the United States pet import requirements here. You'll notice that there are no regulations regarding neutering your pet, and your dog will be allowed in the United States even if he is not neutered.

It's great that you have your dog's certificates in order, just be sure that your International Health Certificate is issued within 10 days of your departure. Additionally, because India is listed as a country affected by screwworm, your dog will need to be inspected within 5 days of departure and declared free of screwworm on his health certificate.

The United States (with the exception of Hawaii) does not require a quarantine, so as long as your dog arrives in good health with all the necessary documentation, he will not need to be quarantined.

For a few additional tips, we recommend taking a look at these common pet travel questions as well as these travel kennel training tips for dogs. Hopefully this helps to make your journey a little easier.

Thanks again for your questions, and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any more or if you think you'd like some help arranging your dog's travel. Good luck with your move to the United States!

I have a boxer and would like to bring him to the US as we have shifted here. Want to know how much it would cost to relocate him?

By Maegan at PetRelocation on June 18, 2018 at 9:48 am

Hi Sam! We'd love to help. There are a number of variables that impact the final cost of a pet relocation. These consist of distances from the home addresses to the airports, travel crate size, airline being used, routing and travel date to name a few. Please fill out our Arrange A Move form and one of our consultants will reach out to you. Looking forward to speaking with you soon!

Hi team, Please let me know as my cousin is living in USA only although he don’t have any plans of moving to India however I want his pitbull terrier to be transferred here in India. So please guide me with thisThanks

Hi Suhail, thank you for your question!

Unfortunately, India has strict rules when it comes to importing animals, and you can't bring a pet into the country unless you have proof it's a transfer of residence. Sorry to be the bearer of this news! This doesn't mean it's impossible to ever bring your pet to India, but you'd probably have to send them with a friend or relative who was in fact moving.

Good luck with everything and please let us know if we can be of assistance in the future.

Hi Meet,

Thanks for your question!

The steps for bringing a pet to the US from India depend on the species. If you want to import a dog or cat to the US, it should be a fairly straightforward process. If your pet is a bird, it is still possible, but it complicates things, especially if the bird is a CITES listed species. You can read more about bird shipping and CITES requirements here. If you would like PetRelocation to assist with this move, we would be happy to speak with you. Just fill out our Arrange a Move form and one of our pet relocation consultants will be in touch to discuss everything with you!

I have a golden retriever.i have to take me pet to US along with me.Kindly provide the help over following per my knowledge following documents are certificate mentioning rabbies vaccinated and nt affected with screw wormB.noc from quarantine department.Kindly mention if any other certificate/document is required?because at airport if authorities ask for any other documents it will be a troublesome situation.2.Importance of it because of the NOC issuance ?how long before the travel should this be there any labelling on travelling crate is required.Waiting for the response.have a good day.

Hi Sheena!

To successfully export your dog from India, you will need a health certificate from a vet within 10 days of travel (with the screwworm statement) and a rabies certificate. These two documents will help you obtain the export certificate from the necessary officials. You will also need to show your own boarding pass or e-ticket to prove you are leaving the country with your dog.

While not necessarily required for travel to the US, microchips are important in easily keeping the paperwork linked to your dog. If all paperwork has the microchip listed, it is easier for customs officials to check. We would recommend getting the microchip as soon as possible to have it listed on all of the export paperwork.

As far as labeling the crate goes, typically only "Live Animal" stickers are required but you'll need to check with the specific airline you will be using for your dog's travels since they may have their own requirements for the crate.

Thanks for reaching out and best of luck with everything! If you need further help, please let us know here and one of our consultants would be happy to put together a move plan for your dog.
