Pet Friendly Airline Series by the Numbers: Lufthansa's Animal Lounge

Monday, May 11, 2015 by Pet Friendly Airlines

Lufthansa Animal LoungeOur Pet Friendly Airline Series continues with more Lufthansa coverage! This airline is one of the largest and busiest in the world, so it's no surprise that they've paid attention to the growing need for pet-friendly amenities.

Lufthansa Airlines offers a one-of-a-kind pet facility called the Lufthansa Animal Lounge. Located in Frankfurt, Germany, this spacious area streamlines the pet import/export process and allows animals a place to take a break and stretch their legs in between flights.

We've explored the Lufthansa Animal Lounge before, but here's a closer look at all the moving parts that make this busy place a welcome respite for pet travelers.

  • The entire Animal Lounge covers about 4,000 square meters.

  • Pets traveling in the cabin who have layovers more than 2-3 hours will also be admitted to the lounge.

  • There's a choice of 3 routes for pets entering the Lounge: Import, Export and Transit.

  • Based on the Lufthansa Cargo network, pets entering the Lounge might be coming from one of 360 destinations in over 90 countries.

  • To accommodate larger animals, such as horses, there are 42 bigger stalls that can be expanded to a size of 28 square meters.

  • Sensitive animals like birds and reptiles can be housed in one of 18 climate-controlled chambers that will be suited to each species specific needs.

  • 39 small animal boxes are available for dogs and cats who need a break from their travel crates.

  • Safety and cleanliness are very important concerns in the Animal Lounge. Each animal keeper has 2 lockers for their clothes and belongings located in the "hygiene sluice" to ensure that germs are not carried back and forth between the inside and the outside.
