Moving a Dog to Tokyo from Orlando

We are pet travel moving our 29 pound Puggle with us to Tokyo. We think we have the paperwork and tests in order; however we're not sure which airline to fly him on. We are leaving this Summer (late July) on United. United will not fly our dog (because he's part pug) until after September 30th.

We are considering Continental's pet friendly cargo program, but we're a little worried because he would need to fly separate from us and it's in Summer temperatures. Does anyone know the difference between flying with your dog (I think they are checked baggage) vs. sending them on cargo? Does the dog fly in a different part of the plane with each? Thank you! Brandy

Hi Brandy,

There are three different ways a pet can travel on an airplane: with the owner in the passenger cabin (in cabin), as accompanied (or excess) luggage in the cargo hold, or as manifest cargo (typically without the owner in the cargo hold).
As long as care is taken in choosing the correct airline, the cargo hold where the pet will travel always is pressurized and climate-controlled.
Continental has a great pet program (in fact, much better than United which would fly your pet under the plane as well) and will take wonderful care of your dog, even if you're not on the same flight. The pet will be kept in a separate part of the cargo hold under the plane. We have a video of the Continental PetSafe program you can watch here.

Good luck!

It is good to hear that Continental has better pet care options than United, even if your pet is put aboard a different flight. I appreciate Continental taking the time to have a PetSafe program. casino en ligne
