Pet traveling to Belize!
Belize. The very name sounds enchanting does it not? And the same holds true for this splendid Central American beauty. Studded with beautiful natural wonders and lush green meadows, Belize is a dream come true for many tourists and expatriates.
Its sweet and calm medieval charm captivates and lures thousands from around the world year after year.
For those traveling or pet moving to Belize, you will be glad to know that dogs and cats can be brought into Belize without quarantine! The import rules to Belize are rather simple; it is just the flights and finding the right airlines that may pose the biggest problem.
Animals must be accompanied by an International Health Certificate that states that they are free from infection/contagious disease and that they are fit and safe to fly. This must be issued by a government approved veterinarian not more than 48 hours prior to shipment; animals must also be certified as having been vaccinated against rabies not less than one month nor more than six months prior to departure. Belize officials also mention that your pet must not have any visible or open wounds on them. If you are moving your dog to Belize, you must have a valid certification of vaccination against distemper, parvovirus, infectious canine hepatitis and leptospirosis.
Animals may be required to be re-vaccinated against rabies on arrival if certifications are deemed unsatisfactory.
For helping on your import permit, you can also contact a local Vet Clinic in Brazil:
Please remember that bringing a pet into Belize falls under live animal importation rules and these rules are regulated by the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA). Domestic pets are allowed to enter the country provided their owners have a valid import permit, international veterinary certificate, a valid rabies vaccination certificate, and that their pets have been inspected by a quarantine officer.
If your beloved dog or cat is small enough, it can usually be carried in the cabin of the scheduled commercial airlines. For larger animals, American and Continental are two of the airlines flying into Belize that ship pets from the US.
Pets are transported in pressurized cargo holds. Charges vary depending on the weight of the animal. There are also cargo airlines that transport pets, including AmeriJet, which has service from Miami to Belize.
Belize has a strange subtropical climate and pets are known to have problems adapting to such weather conditions. Mange and venereal disease are endemic. Rabies occasionally surfaces in rural areas, carried by vampire bats and other wild creatures, so it is essential that you have your dog vaccinated and updated and on preventative medicine for fleas, ticks and heartworm.
Enjoy the beautiful country of Belize, and if you have your own travel experiences to share with us, please do!
