An import permit is required from the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Industry (Nassau) for all animals being brought into the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

For the U.S. and Canada, the following are the main provisions of the import permit as it applies to dogs and cats: 

• The animal must be 6 months of age or older.
• The animal must be accompanied by a valid certificate which substantiates that it has been vaccinated against rabies within not less than 1 month and not more than 10 months prior to importation.
• The animal must be accompanied by a Veterinary Health Certificate presented within 48 hours of arrival in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to a licensed veterinarian for an examination.

THE PERMIT IS VALID FOR 90 DAYS FROM THE DATE OF ISSUE.

The Bahamas has successfully promoted itself as a destination for US jetsetters, and a lot of it is Americanised. Yet there are still opportunities among its 700 islands and 2500 cays to disappear into a mangrove forest, explore a coral reef and escape the high-rise hotels and package-tour madness. The 18th-century Privateers' Republic has become a modern banker's paradise, at least on New Providence and Grand Bahama. On the other islands - once known as the Out Islands but now euphemistically called the Family Islands - the atmosphere is more truly West Indian.

The Bahamas is a year-round destination. Constant trade breezes ensure pleasant temperatures, so unless you're visiting the southern isles, which get infernally hot in summer, weather isn't a major factor in determining when to go.

Climate

Lasting from May to October, the wet season in the Bahamas contains the hottest months of the year and, as the rainfall is quite low (by Caribbean standards) this low-season is a good time to visit. If you're not partial to hot-and-sticky then try March to April and November to December, when the maximum temperature usually sits just below 30°C (86°F). Occasionally cold North American winds sweep down on the Bahamas during winter and spring.

Geography

The closest island to the United States is Bimini, which also known as the gateway to the Bahamas. The island of Abaco is to the east of Grand Bahama. The most southeastern island is Great Inagua. Other notable islands include the Bahamas' largest island, Andros Island, and Eleuthera, Cat Island, Long Island, San Salvador Island, Acklins, Crooked Island, Exuma and Mayaguana. Nassau, The Bahamas capital city, lies on the island of New Providence. To the southeast, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and three more extensive submarine features called Mouchoir Bank, Silver Bank, and Navidad Bank, are geographically a continuation of the Bahamas, but not part of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

Hurricane Andrew hit the northern islands in 1992 Atlantic hurricane season 1992, and Hurricane Floyd hit most of the islands in 1999 Atlantic hurricane season 1999. Hurricane Frances in 2004 the Atlantic hurricane season of 2004 was expected to be the worst ever for the islands. Also in 2004, the northern Bahamas were hit by a less potent Hurricane Jeanne. In 2005 the northern islands were once again struck, this time by Hurricane Wilma.
