PAPUA NEW GUINEA PET IMPORT RULES AND REGULATIONS

Papua New Guinea is a Rabies Free Country

The requirements below are when you depart from another Rabies Free country, like New Zealand. Dogs and cats exported to Papua New Guinea must comply with the import requirements of Papua New Guinea listed in this notice as follows.

An import permit is required for the exportation of dogs and cats Papua New Guinea.

An official veterinarian must certify the following:

1.  They have been examined within 48 hours of embarkation and found to be in good health, and free from clinical evidence of infectious and contagious disease and from ticks, fleas and all other external parasites.

2.  They have treated with treated with an approved acaricide at the recommended dose rate, no more than 5 days prior to the scheduled date of shipment.

3. All pets are microchipped according to ISO standards.

4.  Fully Vaccinated:

In the case of a dog: It has been immunised against distemper canine viral hepatitis and canine parvovirus with a recognised commercial vaccine not less than 7 days and not more than one year prior to export. It has, within 14 days immediately prior to shipment, been treated with praziquantel at a dose rate of 5 mg per kg.

In the case of a cat: It has been immunised against feline enteritis with a recognised commercial vaccine not less than 7 days and not more than one year prior to export.

5.  The owner of the animal must make a declaration that:

1. They are, to the best of my knowledge and belief free from all infectious and contagious disease;

2. They have not been in contact with diseased animals for the 30 days immediately preceding export.

Examination of the animal must take place within 48 hours of departure.

PNG conditions advise that because of this requirement exports should be wary of booking fights early on a Monday.

An official veterinarian means a veterinarian authorised by the Veterinary Administration of the country to perform animal health and/or public health inspections of commodities and, when appropriate, perform certification in conformity with the provisions of the chapter of the OIE Code pertaining to principles of certification.
