Name: Naor
Subject: Traveling with cats cross country
Question: Hello, we will be relocating from FL to CA and need to take our 6 cats. We figured on a budget best way is to put them in the back of the van, build a barrier behind the driver/passenger seats and have them roam with water and litter box. They are not used to being in a car, especially for 4-5 days 12 hours + per day. What is the best advice to keep them happy and quiet for such a long trip?
Answer: Hello Naor!
Honestly, this plan is really not a good idea. If your cats are not used to being in a car, giving them free reign to run and go crazy all over the vehicle is really not safe. Plus, even driving at an extremely slow speed, water, liter, and cats will still get thrown all over the place. The best thing you can do is get each cat their own travel kennel and make sure they're crate trained before you move. They may not stay quiet in their crate for the whole journey, but they will definitely be much less stressed out and safer. As far as crate training, the point is to get your cats familiar to their crates long before they get put in there for traveling, and get them to associate their crate with positive instead of negative experiences (such as the vet).
