Can Pet Shipping be Budget Friendly?

Can Pet Travel be 'Cheap'?

Dear PetRelocation,

I live in Brazil but want to be able to travel with my dog to Sweden regularly since there is where my family lives. What is required in order to make this process as smooth and "cheap" as possible?

Thanks,

Pernilla

Hi Pernilla,

Thanks for your question! Speaking broadly, every time you travel internationally your dog needs to meet the import requirements for the country of arrival (even if you travel frequently there and are only staying for a few days at a time). So, for what you're suggesting, you'll need to get to know the import rules for Sweden and Brazil very well, and in terms of costs there really are no shortcuts or "frequent flyer" discounts to speak of.

In addition to staying up to date with your dog's rabies vaccine, you'll also need to have her microchipped if she's not already, and you'll need to acquire the correct documents for each trip (along with official endorsements). Each time you fly, you must show a vet health certificate that's been issued within the last ten days stating your dog is healthy and fit to fly.

Take some time to consider all of this as you decide how you'll move forward. How good a traveler she is will also affect your decision -- if she gets very nervous on long trips or has any health issues, it would probably be better to leave her at home with a trusted pet sitter.

In terms of costs, here's a link discussing the costs of pet travel as well as ways to cut back on those costs. Pet travel isn't cheap, but there are ways to minimize the expenses a bit.

Hopefully this has been helpful. If you have more questions or if you'd like some assistance, please contact us.

Good luck with everything, Pernilla!
