Peace Corps Adventures: Exporting a Cat from Cameroon

Pet Transport From Cameroon to the US

Dear PetRelocation,

My daughter is in the Peace Corps and wants to bring home her new cat, as she is afraid for its safety. Please advise me if she can bring the cat home or not.

Thank you so much -- it's hard to get an answer.

Sincerely,

Sue

Hi Sue,

Thank you for your question! We've helped a few pets move home from Peace Corps assignments -- we know that it's easy to fall in love with a pet friend made overseas. Here's a recent story in particular: Parasy's move from Madagascar.

We've also helped pets move from Africa and would be happy to assist you with the information you need. The good news is that's it's a pretty simple process to bring a pet into the United States -- cats just need a health certificate issued within 10 days of departure and proof they're up to date on rabies.

It will probably be trickier to settle things on the Cameroon side; for example in addition to the paperwork your daughter will also need to acquire an airline-approved travel crate.

For more details, here's an overview of the US pet import rules and a few helpful tips for moving pets by air.

If you'd like further assistance arranging this move and are interested in our services, please contact us to discuss your options. Good luck with everything, and we hope to hear from you!
