Hurricane Irene may affect pet travel this weekend

Hurricane Irene is currently unleashing "ridiculous" winds upon the Bahamas, and the storm is expected to impact the East Coast of the US within the next few days.

Currently classified as a Category 3 storm, Irene is forecast to pass near Carolina's Outer Banks before hitting Southern New England later in the weekend. If you'll be passing through any airports in this area (such as DCA, BWI, IAD or PHL), there's a good chance you'll be facing delays or cancellations, so get ready to take a deep breath and show some flexibility.

If you live in an area that's expected to be affected, it wouldn't hurt to brush up on your hurricane pet preparedness tips. Remember that hurricanes forecasts change all the time, so keep on eye on the Weather.com radar or this neat-o hurricane tracker from the New York Times (and feel free to share your weather tips or updates with us here, on Twitter or on Facebook).

Here's wishing everyone safe pet travels this hurricane season!
