Pet Parrot Travel to Canada

parrotTransporting Birds to Canada

Hi PetRelocation,

I'm considering moving back to Canada with three pet parrots all aged 10 years old or older.

The date of departure is not yet specified because this fully depends on the release of permit and its effective period (Import Permit from Canada, CITES Import/Export permits, etc.)

Please suggest how long it takes for the whole process. What types of documents are needed to get a quotation? Will there be any impact from the Avian Flu outbreak in Mainland China?

Many thanks,

Hi Margaret,

Thank you for your question! Unfortunately, according to the official relevant Canada government website, birds are prohibited from entering Canada from China at this time. Sorry to be the bearer of this bad news—you're correct that avian influenza is the reason a barrier exists. Several other countries, such as Egypt and India, are not allowed to bring birds into Canada, either.

If you end up deciding to move elsewhere with your birds and would like to learn more about the potential timeline and requirements, please take a look at our guide to international bird travel.

Good luck with everything, Margaret! If you ever find yourself in need of further assistance with pet travel and think we can help, feel free to fill out our online consultation form or give our office a call.

Hi, Just wondering if I can take my indian ring necks from Australia into Canada to reside? If so what is the process. Are permits needed? I can't take them into our own country of Tasmania from the mainland so I am thinking of leaving Australia to live in Canada but won't go without my babies

Hi, I have an Indian ring neck and want to take it to Canada. I live in Bulgaria. what are the chances and procedure to take my parrot with me? Thank you for help

Hi Ajit! Unfortunately at this time, Canada is only accepting birds from regions that are free from Avian Influenza and Bulgaria is not on that list. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Hi Maegan, Thank you for the reply, at least I have the information.

Is there any chance of allowing pet bird import to Canada from India in future. Are there any developed countries that allow the same from India

By Christina at PetRelocation on January 15, 2018 at 3:36 pm

Hello Sarthak,

Thanks for your question! Canada does not currently allow the import of pet birds from India due to the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) there. It is difficult to say whether that will change in the future. If you have specific destination countries in mind, I suggest checking with their government websites for individual regulations regarding importing birds from India.

Best of luck with everything!

Hello Jackie, thanks for the comment!

Here are the rules and requirements for importing birds into Canada, as listed on their government website.

Also, since most Amazon Parrots fall under CITES regulations you may need additional import and export permits in order to move your bird. You can learn more about this on the CITES website here.

We hope this helps, Jackie! If you need further guidance, please let us know by reaching out to us here. One of our consultants would be happy to cover our service options and pricing with you.
