Pet Travel Question: Cat Quarantines and New Zealand

Name: Madeline
Number of Pets: 2
Pet Type: Cats

To: New Zealand

Hello, I'm a New Zealander residing in Mexico City. My husband and I are planning to move back to NZ this year, and we have two two-year-old cats here in Mexico. Last year we took them with us when we moved to the USA, and we gave them all the vaccinations such as rabies etc... and they moved there just fine. My question is, I'm aware NZ will not accept them unless they have lived in another country such as the USA or UK for 6 months. Where can I take them to stay for 6 months??  Are there companies in the USA that specialise in assisting relocations and housing pets for the required 6 months? I hate the thought of leaving them so would like to find a good place and then get assistance to move them from the US to NZ. Thanks so much, I just want to make sure we get everything properly sorted so its a pain free journey for them! Thank you, -Madeline

Hi Madeline,

Thanks for contacting us! Your questions are not uncommon, as quarantine regulations can seem pretty confusing. Here are the Pet Import Requirements for New Zealand to help get you started. Take a look at the PetRelocation website to find travel tips, and please contact one of our Pet Relocation Specialists if you'd like some help planning your move. We have helped people handle the door-to-door moving process (including quarantines) many times before, so we'd love to be of service to you!

Good luck with everything!
