Pet Travel Question: International Microchips

Hey there! I am traveling (not moving) and just found out that my dog (a 4 lb Maltese) needs to have a microchip. How can I find out if customs in Lisbon has a US microchip reader? Does it have to be an ISO chip? Also, is the chip necessary or can I have my dog tattooed? Please advise!

Hi Juan,

Thanks for the question. We generally recommend getting an ISO-approved Microchip for international travel; you can read more about microchips on our blog and find out more about the pet import requirements for Portugal on our site. Tattoos are not an acceptable form of identification.

Let us know if you have any more questions, and good luck with the trip!
