Pet Travel Question: New Zealand Pet Quarantine

dogHi PetRelocation,

What exactly does the 10 days of pet quarantine mean for New Zealand? Is my dog locked up in a cage for 10 days? Do I have access to my dog?

Thank you kindly,
Gabby

Hi Gabby,

Thanks for contacting us with your question. Though the thought of sending a pet to quarantine in order to complete a relocation is initially a bit scary to most people, once you look into the facts you'll find that it's really not so bad.

We've helped many pets move to New Zealand safely, and if all the advance preparations are carried out correctly, your dog should be able to complete the minimum quarantine requirements in a safe and comfortable environment.

First, take a look at the New Zealand pet import requirements as well as the official government link discussing quarantine facilities for dogs in New Zealand. Most places offer plenty of space for dogs to stay active during their stay, are staffed by trained professionals, and they encourage visits from owners. We recently moved three cats to New Zealand who were able to complete the requirements in 10 days. Reading their story will illustrate pets' abilities to take this part of the moving process in stride.

Please review this information and then let us know if you have more questions. Going to rabies-free New Zealand with your dog is certainly possible but probably not the easiest thing you'll ever do, and we'd be happy to tell you more about our door-to-door services if you're interested in some assistance.

Good luck, and we hope to hear from you soon!
