UK Pet Travel: When Should a Dog’s Microchip Be Implanted?

Hi PetRelocation,

My boxer is current on rabies but may need other shots to meet requirements, I'm not sure. Is there a link of current requirements to transport a dog from the USA to UK?

I read they need to be microchipped before the rabies shot? Does that mean I need to get her chipped and then she has to have another rabies shot? Just trying to figure out exactly what is needed so we can start the process as we plan to move in about 6-8 months back to UK. My boxer is from the USA.

Thanks,

Neil

Hi Neil,

Thank you for your question! Moving dogs from the US to the UK definitely means you'll need to follow a particular process, and you're right that the microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccine is administered.

You can find out more about these rules by taking a look at our UK Pet Travel Spotlight, which covers many aspects of this pet travel process. To drill down to the official health requirements specifically, here is a link to the UK's official government website.

As you'll see it takes a few weeks to plan a pet move to the UK, so you're on the right track by starting nice and early. Please let us know if you have any additional questions, and if you'd like some assistance with your move, please contact us for a pet travel consultation.

Hope this helps, good luck!
