Which States Have The Most Pets? U.S. Pet Ownership Trends

If you're interested in pet ownership trends, the largest breakdown of statistics is now available for you to peruse. The 2012 edition of the Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook reveals the results of a national survey of over 50,000 households and compares current pet trends to those of past years.

Here are a few items of interest from the book:

-There are approximately 70 million pet dogs and 74.1 million pet cats in the United States.

-The state with the most pet owners is Vermont, where 70.8 percent of households have pets.

-Massachusetts and Washington D.C. have the least amount of pet owners.

-In 2011, six out of ten pet owners considered their pets to be their family members (they sound like our kind of people).
