Frequently Asked Questions

What to Know About Planning Safe Pet Transport

Moving is stressful, and moving with a pet can make the experience even more emotionally challenging -- pets are part of the family.

We know you have many questions about where to begin and how to plan the safest experience possible, so here are a few discussion topics to get you started in the right direction.

Where do I start?

  • First, learn about the import rules for your destination country to ensure it's possible to bring your pet where you want to go, as some countries have breed and species bans or don't allow pets to arrive from certain countries.
  • From here, start to build a plan of action based on the vet visits and paperwork required, and think about airline and routing options, crate training, and whether or not you want to do this on your own or hire assistance.

Can my pet fly in the cabin with me?

  • Understandably, most pet owners would rather keep their pets by their side when they fly, but airline and country rules often make this impossible. Tiny pets can sometimes fly in the cabin, especially if you're flying within the United States, but most international flights require pets to fly via cargo.
  • Chances are, if you're reaching out to us, it's because your pets must fly via manifest cargo. One of our Consultants would be happy to discuss your options and let you know why manifest cargo is safer than you probably think (and our preferred method for pet travel).

Is cargo travel safe for pets?

  • Of course, safety is a top concern when considering a pet move, and we're confident that pet air travel is safe when you've taken all the necessary precautions. (We wouldn't be in this business if it weren't.)
  • This means choosing a pet-friendly airline whose cargo area is pressure and temperature controlled and has solid, established pet-safe policies.
  • Before you travel, we recommend talking with your vet about any health concerns, helping your pet get to a healthy weight through diet and exercise, and perhaps most importantly, working to crate-train your pet well before the move.

How much will this cost?

  • Every pet move is different, which makes standard pricing difficult to establish. Factors like pet size, breed, origin, destination, and even time of year can all come into play when determining costs, so a conversation with a PetRelocation Consultant is needed before a realistic estimate can be determined.

My pet is sensitive/has particular needs — can they still travel?

  • Some pets are naturally more easygoing and ready to travel than others, but that doesn't mean older pets, snub-nosed breeds, or pets with nervous temperaments can't have a safe journey. From elderly Chihuahuas to diabetic ferrets, we've managed many sensitive moves safely. Talk to us to learn more about the extra precautions you can take when traveling with your pet.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY FLIGHT IS DELAYED?

  • Travel delays can be frustrating for you and your pet, but we always have contingency plans to ensure your pet's safety and comfort. We closely monitor flights and ensure your pet is appropriately cared for during unexpected layovers or delays. We also work with you to provide updates and adjust travel plans.

Do I have to hire someone to help, or can I do this myself?

  • Many people hire professional assistance with their pet moves to save time and minimize stress during the already overwhelming life event of moving. Like planning your wedding, remodeling your kitchen, or training your new puppy, it's possible to roll up your sleeves and start researching everything yourself. Still, sometimes a task is too complicated to handle easily. Or, though you'd like to try DIY, you don't have the time to do a great job.

How long before my pet's travel date should I start planning for their transport?

  • It's important to start planning for your pet's transport as early as possible, ideally several months before the travel date. This will give you time to research the import requirements of your destination country, ensure that your pet is up-to-date on all necessary vaccinations and health checks, and make any necessary arrangements with airlines and pet transport companies. Additionally, booking your pet's transport well in advance can help ensure that you secure a spot on your desired flight and that your pet's travel goes as smoothly as possible.

What should I do to help my pet adjust to their travel crate?

  • Crate training is an essential part of preparing your pet for travel. Start by gradually introducing your pet to the crate, placing treats, toys, and bedding inside to make it a comfortable and welcoming space. Encourage your pet to enter and exit the crate independently, and gradually increase the time they spend inside. It's important to ensure that the crate is the correct size for your pet and meets airline requirements. Providing your pet with plenty of exercises and mental stimulation in the days leading up to travel can also help them feel more relaxed and comfortable in their crate.

Can you provide references from previous clients who have used your pet transport services?

  • Absolutely! As a reputable pet transport company, we understand the importance of building trust with our clients. We're happy to provide references and testimonials from previous customers using our services. Additionally, we encourage you to research and read online reviews and ratings from independent sources to get a sense of the quality of our services and the experiences of other pet owners who have worked with us.
