“Can I Bring my Cocker Spaniel from India to the United States?”

Name: Ritika
Number of Pets: 1
Pet Type: Dog
Pet Breed: Cocker Spaniel
From: Mumbai, India
To: California, US

I have a 2-year-old Cocker Spaniel. He is plumpy (he weighs about 27 kg) and he has a leg problem but can run and walk. I am shifting from Mumbai to the USA (California) and there is no one to take care of my dog here, so I was wanting to take him with me. I just want to know: what are the necessary documents, and do we need a letter from the mayor in that location? Please let me know as soon a possible.

Thanks,

Ritika

Hi Ritika,

Thanks for your question. Moving pets to the United States is generally pretty straightforward (here are the pet import requirements for the US), and in terms of your dog's leg issue, it will be up to your vet to decide whether or not he's fit to fly. It's always wise to speak to a vet about matters like this, and he or she will be the one to issue the health certificate required by the airline so it's especially important in this case.

Beyond that, India can be tricky when it comes to exporting pets, so you'll want to start researching the steps as soon as possible and possibly consider hiring professional help. We'd be happy to offer a quote for our services or you can check out IPATA.org for more pet shipping options.

Hopefully this helps you get started with your move, Ritika. Good luck with everything!
