Pet Transport Q&A: Hedgehog Travel Questions

hedgehogTransporting a Hedgehog to Canada

Dear PetRelocation,

Can we move a hedgehog to Canada?

Thanks,

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

According to the information currently available from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and its Automated Import Reference System, hedgehogs are not permitted entry into Canada from Qatar. Sorry to be the bearer of this news!

Here's what the website says: "The import of these animals from this/these countries is currently prohibited. A risk assessment may be required before the development of import conditions could be considered. If you wish more information on the risk assessment process, please contact your nearest CFIA Import Office."

Feel free to contact a CFIA office to find out about the latest rules and regulations. Sometimes online information about pet import laws isn't quite up to date, so it's always a good idea to double check with the direct authorities about changes that may have occurred or that may be upcoming.

In general, rules surrounding hedgehog travel into other countries aren't often well-outlined, so no matter where hedgehog owners hope to go, it looks like a bit of research will be necessary. We recommend checking the country import requirements via the Ministry of Agriculture if you can't find the information on typical websites.

Thanks for checking in with us, and good luck with everything!
