Pet Travel Advice: Moving a Dog to Australia From the United States

Hi PetRelocation,

I have never moved internationally before, and I'm looking at going to school in Australia in a little over a year. I want to make sure I am fully prepared when I do and I also want the best care for my dog, so I am looking for help.

How do I go about arranging my dog's move to Australia? I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for your question -- moving pets to Australia is definitely an endeavor that takes time and careful planning.

To start, read over our recently published Australia Pet Travel Series. Here you'll find information about all the major topics and questions associated with the process, including details about vaccine timelines and quarantine (there is a 10-day quarantine required of all pets upon arrival).

Australia pet travel is complicated but not impossible, so we recommend taking some time to read over this information and then strongly consider hiring professional assistance. Having an expert handle all the complex details will make this a less stressful process and will minimize the chance of problems and delays.

If you're planning to return to the United States after you finish school, note that this will be a much, much easier process. The United States does not require quarantine, and essentially pets just need to follow airline requirements and have an up to date rabies vaccine. Here is a look at the United States pet import rules.

Hope this helps, Matthew. Just let us know if you'd like to schedule a pet travel consultation with one of our Specialists, and good luck with everything!
