Pet Travel between New Zealand and Australia

I noticed the latest update says that cats and dogs imported to New Zealand generally require 10 days of quarantine. Can you please advise what the time frame in quarantine would be for our animals to travel from Brisbane, Australia to New Zealand?

Appreciate your help and I look forward to your reply.

Hi Kirsty,

Luckily for you, pets moving from Australia to New Zealand do not need to fulfill a quarantine. They also don't need to secure an import permit (but they will still be inspected upon arrival and must show a vet health certificate signed by your vet). Since Australia and New Zealand are both pretty strict when it comes it importing pets, traveling between them seems to be a relatively straightforward process.

Please take a look at the official New Zealand pet import requirements, and if you have any more questions, just let us know. Thanks for reaching out, and have a great trip!

Hi there, we are looking to purchase a German shepherd puppy from a breeder in Adelaide and were wondering what the process/cost of importing the pup to New Zealand would be.Thanks Hannah

Hello Hanna,

Since the puppy is from Australia, the process will be much easier than if she were coming from most other countries. You can read the requirements for importing cats and dogs to New Zealand here. This page also contains a guidance document and checklist that lists specific requirements for pets coming to New Zealand from Australia. When calculating costs, consider any paperwork and veterinary visits, and pet inspection required throughout the process, along with the cost of booking a pet of this size as manifest cargo (this pricing is provided by the airline you choose). You will not need to worry about the cost of quarantine or procuring an import permit as these steps are not required for pets originating in Australia. Hope this helps!
