Pet Travel From South Africa to England

Good Day,

Would you be able to give me a rough indication of what it would cost to take our dogs with us to England? What are the requirements and is there a quarantine period?

Thanks,

Marco

Hi Marco,

Thank you for your inquiry, we'd be happy to help!

As we note in our recent UK Pet Travel Spotlight Series, one of the first things you'll want to do is get acquainted with the pet import requirements for pets coming from South Africa. According to the official UK government website, South Africa is an “unlisted” country so you'll need to follow the rules outlined here for a smooth entry. If all rules are followed correctly, your dogs will not need to fulfill a quarantine period.

As for price, this will ultimately depend on a few factors but for an idea of what to expect you can take a look at these typical pet travel costs.

For more information, please look over these frequently asked questions about UK pet travel and feel free to contact us for a pet travel consultation if you're interested in hiring some assistance. Hi Caroline! If you are moving your pets from South Africa, it will take approximately 4 months of preparation before import. Once they arrive into UK, quarantine is not required as long as all the paperwork is accurate. Feel free to check out this link about any additional information. Hope this helps & let us know if we can be of assistance!

Hi I’d like more info on pet relocation from Durban South Africa to London for my two dogs a Yorkshire terrier and miniature schnauzer. My dogs have lived in sa for just over year and are originally from the UK. Their vaccines are up to date. What is the quarantine period for dogs coming into the UK.

Hi Michelle! Whenever relocating a pet from one country to another, your pet loses it's UK residency status and relocating them back to the UK is a full export from ZA and import into the UK. Since South Africa is considered "unlisted" in the eyes of the UK, you will need at least 4 months of preparations in South Africa before importing them back into the UK. Feel free to check out the requirements here. If we can be of any additional assistance, please contact us directly. Hope this helps!

The dog breeds are : 1 German Shepherd, 1 Dachshund, 1 Chow Chow, 1 Shar Pei and 2 Chow Chow cross Shar Pei. The birds are both African greys. Hi Antoinette! Yes, you can take your pup with you on holiday. However, whenever a pet leaves a country and enters another, it is considered a full export from one country and full import into another. There is a ton of vet work & paperwork required on both ends of a relocation in order to safely move a pet. You'd want to review the requirements here -- depending upon which country you are exporting from will dictate the amount of time needed to plan your pup's relocation (up to 4 months in some cases). Hope this helps!

Hi Michelle!

For questions regarding commercial imports, we suggest contacting DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) in London directly to see what steps you must take. You can reach the Pet Travel Scheme Helpline at pettravel[at]apha[dot]gsi[dot]gov[dot]uk.
