Pet Transport Advice on Transiting and Layovers

Hello There,

I will be traveling with my dog from Chicago to Israel and will stop in Austria for two hours.

Should my dog be vaccinated for Tapeworm? Is this a requirement by the Austrian authorities? He recently got his three-year rabies shot (in April).

Thank you for your help!

Sincerely,

Yoav

Hi Yoav,

Thank you for your question!

We often field inquiries about layovers and vaccine requirements, and essentially the answer is this: unless you are switching airlines or leaving the airport, you do not need to worry about meeting Austria's particular import requirements. When you are just quickly transiting through a hub, all that matters is the rules for your destination country and any additional airline requirements that may apply.

For reference, here are the pet import requirements for Israel as well as a link to a few basic pet travel tips. In addition to choosing a pet friendly airline and being well-acquainted with all pet shipping requirements, we also recommend crate training your dog well in advance of your move and discussing any health-related questions with your vet.

Hope this helps! If you decide you'd like some assistance, feel free to give us a call at 1-877-PET-MOVE or fill out our online consultation form.

Happy travels!
