Pet Travel Barriers: Puerto Rico’s Pit Bull Ban

Pit Bull Transport to Puerto Rico

Hi PetReloction,

My family has had our dog for 5 years and we will be moving to Puerto Rico soon. Can we take her with us?

Hi Erika,

Thank you for your inquiry—unfortunately Pit Bulls are not allowed to be imported into Puerto Rico at this time.

Per the USDA website:

All breeds of Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, American Pit Bull terrier, and hybrids produced by crossbreeding with dogs of other breeds are prohibited to be introduced or imported to Puerto Rico.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Erika. Breed bans are certainly frustrating and can throw a wrench into international travel plans.

Be aware as you continue to research Pit Bull travel that many airlines require reinforced crates when transporting this and other breeds, and there are a few other countries that practice breed-specific legislation, as well.

For more information, take a look at these resources about breed-specific legislation and traveling with Pit Bulls. Please let us know if you have further questions and think we might be able to help with anything.

Good luck!

Relocating to Puerto Rico have 3 Dogs for 6 years 1 Begles Mix and 2 Lavander mix. Have a been taken them to Benfield pet hospital. Just found out Puerto Rico open Benfield Vet. I would not like to put then in a shelter. They never been abuse. My dogs are the only things that is holding me to relocate. I live in Newark NJ. Where I live the owner is not given me time to find a place to live. Is hard to find a place to live with dogs. My only choice is Relocate in Puerto Rico.

Hi Keyra! Thanks for the comment! We did read in the news that it is now legal to own pit bulls in Puerto Rico. However, the USDA still lists pit bulls as banned for importation into Puerto Rico so we are currently checking with our agents & our government contacts for clarification. We will update this article once we have confirmation that we are able to relocate pit bulls. Thanks again!

Hi Jacqueline, Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, breeds such as Pit Bulls and Staffordshire Terriers are often listed as "restricted" because of historic breed bans rather than health issues. Though you'll find plenty of evidence to support the fact that these breeds are no more dangerous than any other (as we're sure you already know), their size, appearance and possible strength still dictates the policies of many countries and airlines. So unfortunately, Pit Bulls are not allowed to be imported into Puerto Rico at this time. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Jacqueline! If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know.

Hi Alondra! Unfortunately, you will not be able to bring your dog with you to Puerto Rico, as pit bull terriers are a banned breed there. Thanks for reaching out to us with your question!
